Talk on PFD and P&ID Development for UM 4th Year Chem Eng Students

Plant Integration

TYPE Description
Hints
  • Sequence: Block Diagrams-->Schematics-->PFDs-->P&IDs
  • NOT after you have designed your individual Unit Op
What to do after Sem 1
  • Review Block Diagrams, Process Schematics, PFDs and P&IDs
  • Check for mistakes/deficiencies as per "Common Mistakes"
  • You may have opportunity to revise PFDs and P&IDs for your individual Unit Op in line with Block Dia / Schematics / PFDs / P&IDs
Examples
  • Perform Pinch Analysis to minimise external heating and cooling requirements
  • Develop Heat Exchanger Networks where one unit is not sufficient
  • Mass Exchange: Pay attention to "feed from" and "to" streams:
    • Ensure correct stream specifications (pressure/temperature/composition) to next Unit Op
    • Add recycle stream(s) to optimise yields
    • Add waste / vent / flare streams
  • Show required control (final control devices and control loops) for combined/integrated process - eliminate unnecessary/conflicting process control loops
  • Show planned future equipment/systems/unit ops e.g. compression facilities in offshore O&G Production to cater for declining reservoir pressure
  • Show OSBL (Outside Battery Limits) in addition to ISBL (Inside Battery Limits) facilities where appropriate
